A Ruthie Sommers Holiday

The California cottage of one of our favorite designers, Ruthie Sommers, is featured in the December Cottage Living. Pick-up a copy to see what sort of holiday touches Ruthie goes for when December rolls around, as well as the latest incarnation of her ever evolving home.

It's too bad Ruthie's upcoming book, The L.A. House, will not be published in time for holiday gift-giving. The expected release date is November 2007.

I was so excited to see these pictures of Ruthie Sommers home, too. I have been studying them against the first Domino issue. Is it a new house? I can't match the living room architecture.

I like use of existing items. For instance, how the old kitchen chandelier is now in the bathroom - I am pretty certain it's the same at least.

What do you think?

Hey Kate!
Great to hear from you. I do the exact same thing you do -- study designers' own homes to see which pieces they use in new places, from room to room, or home to home over time. And in Ruthie's case, from store to home to store!

The article, as well as the images, make it seem that this definitely is a different house, not that beachfront home seen in the first Domino.
Cheers!

ah... I just checked out her very recently revamped website... I see what you mean about from store to home to store... you have a good eye!

I suppose most designers with a showroom do that. I have noticed Vanessa/Turquoise (LA) and Lee/Pieces (Atlanta) do that, too. Makes sense.

On a separate note, I only discovered your blog on Thanksgiving (from a search about Ruthie, in fact) and I absolutely LOVE it! I spent the holiday reading everything - including links. Keep up the great work! :)

Hi Kate (and you must be a "new" Kate -- sorry for the confusion!) Anyway, many thanks for your kind words about my site, and yes I've also noticed how Lee of Pieces and Vanessa of Turquoise move items from shop to home or vice versa.

No worries!
yes - I see you have posts from katedesigns (and probably others)... I'm yet another Kate! Since there are quite a few of us Kates :) , I use my projectmagenta sign-in (but I still usually write Kate at the end).
