I don't know how the Martha Stewart photographers do it. For me it seems impossible to capture the subtle shimmer of ornaments on my own tree. So, for better or worse, here's a little peek at Anthropologie's woodblock elephant ornament on a fresh Fraser fir. In person these have a little sparkle and lovely details, like whipstitching.

Impossible to Photograph: Trees

All about lighting. Martha Stewart's crew has professional lighting.
I would try to take close up photos of your ornaments during the daytime, make sure the camera is steady.
You need to have coffee with Maison 21 - he was lamenting the same problem. I think you both have done a fine job. Plus, you'll have to suffer mine at some point.
Thanks all :)
Didn't know Anthropologie has ornaments...I will have to check it out!

So funny--I tried in vain to get a good shot of my tree last night. I am glad to hear that others are having this same problem, as I was begining to think that I was the world's worst photographer!
Pretty elephant. I love your Christmas colors.
thanks millie.
Fraser firs smell THE BEST!
I used to work for MSL... we photographed Christmas trees at two times of the day--- either verrrrry early, as the sun was coming up (think 6 a.m.-ish)...giving a dreamy, blue-cast look to it, or in the late afternoon, as the sun was setting. Obviously, a professional photographer and some lighting was used too (and made all the difference), but that could help you with your pictures!
Hmm, good advice from Anon! I will have to try that. But I love your tree Courtney! And your elepahnt ornament. I better get a move on and get our tree!
Anon, thanks so much!
Katie, thanks for the sweet words :)
